Kiwi Lasike signs NFL futures contract

New Zealand's Paul Lasike is a step closer to an NFL contract after aligning himself with the Chicago Bears for next season.

New Zealand NFL hopeful Paul Lasike has signed a futures contract with the Chicago Bears, giving them full rights to him next season.

A former Auckland-based rugby player, Lasike has made enormous strides since switching to American Football four years ago and has taken another step closer to a full professional contract.

His deal is similar to that of Australian rugby league star Jarryd Hayne, who signed with the San Francisco 49ers which led to a rookie start this season.

Lasike, 25, spent this season in the Bears' practice squad, having previously played three years at Brigham Young University in Utah.

He will spend the off-season pushing for a permanent roster spot at fullback, having been among nine players to sign futures contracts.
