Mitchell Santner has been ruled out of New Zealand's first Test against Pakistan after fracturing his right wrist in the Northern Districts practice nets on Friday.
The 24-year-old spinner was struck while training with Northern ahead of their four-day domestic competition match against Canterbury on Saturday.
An X-ray showed a fracture in his right wrist, ruling him out of the first Test against Pakistan and leaving him in doubt for the second.
New Zealand coach Mike Hesson said after Santner's strong tour of India, it was disappointing for him to be injured ahead of the first home Test of the summer.
"We're unsure whether Mitch will be available for the second Test at this stage, but we'll be monitoring his recovery closely and look forward to having him back."
The first Test against Pakistan begins on November 17 at Hagley Oval in Christchurch.
Santner was initially confident his Test selection prospects wouldn't be affected after he was struck trying to evade a Scott Kuggeleijn bouncer.
"Hopefully it's just a bit of bruising. It's on the right hand, which is a bit better than being on the left hand," he said.
Santner has emerged as one of New Zealand's first-choice selections in all forms, having notched 10 Tests and 29 limited overs internationals since his debut 18 months ago.
