Kiwis pull off record turnaround Test win

New Zealand have pulled off a phenomenal comeback win in the first Test against Bangladesh in Wellington as the defeated tourists broke a 122-year record.

New Zealand have stormed to a remarkable seven-wicket win over Bangladesh in the final session of the first Test in Wellington, a stunning turnaround after the tourists made almost 600 in the first innings.

In front of a crowd of more than 4000 at the Basin Reserve on Monday, captain Kane Williamson (104 not out) hit the winning runs while Henry Nicholls was not out four as the hosts reached 3-217 with 17.2 overs remaining.

Williamson reached his century from 89 balls, and combined with Ross Taylor (60) in a 163-run partnership to set up the incredible triumph.

Bangladesh's 8(dec)-595 was the highest first-innings score from a side to go on and then lose the Test.

The previous record, 586, had stood for just over 122 years, when England, in December 1894 in Sydney beat Australia by 10 runs after being asked to follow on.

After the Black Caps replied with 539 and dismissed late on day four, the match seemed doomed to end in a draw.

However, Bangladesh, missing skipper Mushfiqur Rahim after he was hit on the helmet by a short ball, were dismissed for 9-160 on the morning of the final day.

With their inexperienced attack, the Bangladeshis couldn't then halt a controlled onslaught from Williamson and Taylor.

The result is a remarkable turnaround in the match, especially given nearly 50 overs were lost on the first day to rain.

Kiwi opener Tom Latham's first-innings 177 earned him the man-of-the-match award.

Bangladesh banked a 56-run first-innings lead, but in their second innings they fell victim to New Zealand's short ball attack and some rash shots.

Bangladesh have now lost all six Tests in New Zealand and must pick themselves up for the second match starting in Christchurch on Friday.

For New Zealand it is their second Test win in a row which seemed unlikely until the final day.

In Hamilton in November, Pakistan lost their last nine wickets in the final session to give New Zealand a 138-run victory.

RECORDS AND MILESTONES SET AT THE BASIN:

*Shakib Al Hasan's 217 in the first innings was the highest individual score for Bangladesh

*His partnership of 359 with Mushfiqur Rahim for the fifth wicket was Bangladesh's highest in Tests

*It was also the highest fifth wicket partnership on New Zealand soil

*The 595-8 declared was Bangladesh's highest score against New Zealand

*The aggregate of 1511 runs is a Test record for the Basin Reserve

*Tom Latham's 177 was the second highest score by an opener at the Basin

*It was the first time since 2008 that New Zealand had successfully chased a target of more than 200. That was also against Bangladesh, in Chittagong, when they scored 7-317 to win.
