Germany look set to start World Cup-tested Miroslav Klose against the Socceroos as both sides face a selection drama over their lone striker.
While the Socceroos mull over a choice between Josh Kennedy and Harry Kewell, the Germans have a similar decision to make ahead of the Group D opener in Durban on Sunday.
Klose, who scores a goal every two internationals and has proven himself in the World Cup cauldron, faces a huge challenge from naturalised Brazilian Cacau - excellent in Germany's lead-up matches.
Klose has been a splinter collector for German giants Bayern Munich at club level, spending much of the season on the bench. However the 32-year-old was the top-scorer at the last World Cup, and has 10 goals in total at his two tournament appearances.
And those in the know say that is likely to win him the nod over Cacau, who has scored three times in his past three appearances for Germany.
Podolski sees Klose on track for top form
Team mate Lukas Podolski has said Klose was on track to return to top form after some excellent work at training this week.
"Klose has been fantastic for the team in the past and I am sure he will be for us here," Podolski said.
For all the criticism of Verbeek's stoicism in playing a 4-2-3-1 formation, that is exactly what the Germans will play - promising a true contest with clear match-ups all over the field.
While Germany expects the Socceroos to come and park the bus in front of their goal and attempt to eke out a draw, Australian star Kewell believes his side may be capable of more after their tough training regimen.
Kewell admits it to be a 'massive test'
Despite the enthusiasm Kewell admitted it would be a massive test of the Socceroos' capabilities against the three-time World Cup winners and seven-time finalists.
"Every time they come to a big tournament they're favourites to near-enough win it," Kewell said.
"It's big game for us, but we're up for the challenge. It's whoever's organised the most; it's whoever wants it the most.
"We're working hard all the time. The team's looking good, the team's looking strong. We're as prepared as we can be."
