Knights' Moga eyes 2019 NRL return

Newcastle centre Tautau Moga has pencilled in an NRL comeback in roiund five next year after his fourth knee reconstruction.

Newcastle centre Tautau Moga, once dubbed the "next Israel Folau", has a much more simpler goal these days after pencilling in a return to the NRL next year after his fourth knee reconstruction.

"I just want to wear boots again," Moga told the Knights' "Our Town Our Team" podcast.

Moga, 24, will soon get his wish as he begins to fast-track his slow road to recovery four months after breaking down in the Knights' round four clash with St George Illawarra.

The Knights strike weapon began leg weights on Monday and next week hopes to begin running on their low gravity training (LGT) machine as he targets a round five playing comeback in 2019.

"I saw a specialist a week ago and told me everything is on track, just to get a stretch of the legs on the LGT for two to three weeks and hopefully that leads to running on the training paddock," Moga said.

"In round five (next year) I'll probably be back. That'll probably be a year from there (injury)."

Moga created a buzz when he began his NRL career in 2012 with Sydney Roosters as a teenager.

Then the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) curse struck.

Moga spent the entire 2013 season on the sidelines after rupturing his ACL twice in eight months at the Roosters.

He moved to North Queensland in 2014 but by the next year was out of action again after a third knee reconstruction denied him a spot in the Cowboys' 2015 premiership-winning team.

Overall the strike weapon played just 14 games in two seasons for the Roosters and only made 18 appearances from 2014-16 for the Cowboys.

Moga would have been forgiven for thinking his bad luck was over when he played every game for Brisbane - all 27 - last year before being snapped up by Newcastle.

However, he broke down in just his fourth game for the Knights.

It was the first time his left knee was damaged - three three previous reconstructions were on his right.

Moga said his young family had helped him through the dark times that soon followed his latest fitness setback.

"At one stage it was (mentally challenging)," he said.

"Two weeks after I did it, a lot of people were texting and calling but I didn't reply until a month later.

"That was probably a bit rude but I just needed time to think.

"I just had down time with family, to keep my mind off footy, just focusing on the happy stuff."

Moga is in the first of a three-year Knights deal reportedly worth $330,000 a season.
