Newcastle outside backs Shaun Kenny-Dowall and Hymel Hunt will be fit to face Cronulla in round one of the NRL after being cleared of pre-season injuries.

Already without centre Tautau Moga on return from a serious knee injury, Kenny-Dowall and Hunt both missed the Knights' final preparations for the opening round.

But the club on Friday confirmed centre Hunt - who did not play either of the club's pre-season trials - had overcome a hamstring injury while winger Kenny-Dowall would recover in time from a rolled ankle.

"Hymel was touch and go for the (last) trial," head of physical performance Balin Cupples said.

"We probably could've played him with limited minutes but in the context of the game and the bigger picture into competition, he came through a really comprehensive hamstring protocol."

Meanwhile Moga is expected to make his return through reserve grade after needing major surgery on both his knees last April.

The news isn't as good for back-up half Mason Lino, who injured his knee in the last weekend of trials and will miss the start of the season.
