New Zealand's miserable tour of India has continued with a six-wicket defeat in the first of five one-day internationals.
Having suffered a series whitewash in the three Tests, a change of format failed to arrest the Black Caps' poor form as they were dismissed for 190 after losing the toss in Dharamsala.
Debutant Hardik Pandya and Amit Mishra took three wickets apiece while Umesh Yadav and Kedar Jadhav, who has only one first-class scalp to his name, each struck twice.
The tourists slipped to 7-65 before opener Tom Latham was joined by Tim Southee, making his 100th 50-over appearance for New Zealand, and the pair made the score respectable courtesy of a 71-run ninth-wicket stand.
Latham became the first New Zealand batsman to carry his bat in ODIs, finishing unbeaten on 79, while Southee's brutal half-century was the first from a Kiwi number 10 in the one-day format.
However, the pair's late resurgence failed to hurt India as, despite losing four wickets, half-centurion Virat Kohli saw the hosts home with 16.5 overs unused.
