Konta all class after Wimbledon exit

Britain's long wait for another Wimbledon women's singles champion continues after Johanna Konta's gallant run came to an end in the semi-finals.

With no regrets, Johanna Konta has graciously accepted her fate after falling short in her much-hyped bid to become Britain's first Wimbledon women's finalist in 40 years.

The Sydney-born star admitted to being totally outclassed in a 6-4 6-2 semi-final loss to five-time champion Venus Williams on Thursday.

"She dictated the match from the very first ball till the very last one," Konta said.

"She just showed her true qualities and why she's a five-time champion here, just the true champion that she is.

"It was very difficult for me to get a good foothold in the match. The few opportunities that I did get, she did incredibly well to take them away from me.

"I don't think I did too much wrong out there."

Konta's hopes of becoming the first British woman to contest the singles final at The All England Club since Virginia Wade won the title in 1977 began to fade after the world No.7 committed four uncustomary errors in the 10th game to hand Williams the opening set.

The match was all but over after Konta double-faulted in dropping serve to fall behind 3-1 in the second set and the Brit conceded Williams' vast experience had come to the fore.

"This was my second grand slam semi-final. It was her 202nd, I bet," Konta said.

"So she definitely came into the match with a lot more experience than I did.

"(But) I was incredibly happy with the level I was able to produce kind of day in, day out. It's a long two weeks.

"I would have liked to have made it a full two weeks, but it's okay."
