Johanna Konta's preparations for next week's US Open suffered a blow after she was forced to withdraw from the Connecticut Open in New Haven due to a viral illness.
The Brit, who beat German Laura Siegemund 6-2 7-5 in the opening round, was scheduled to face Carla Suarez Navarro but tournament organisers announced she had pulled out beforehand, giving her opponent a walkover win to the quarter-finals.
Konta is the only British woman with direct entry into the main draw of the year's final grand slam tournament.
Lucky loser Belinda Bencic made the most of her reprieve with a 6-3 6-2 victory over qualifier Camila Giorgi in the round of 16.
Anett Kontaveit of Estonia overcame lucky loser Pauline Parmentier 3-6 6-2 6-2 in the last match of the first round.
