Kookaburras belt Fiji 17-0 in hockey

Australia's men's hockey team have beaten Fiji 17-0 in their Oceania Cup opener.

The world champion Kookaburras had eight different scorers as they belted hapless Fiji 17-0 in their opening match of the Oceania Cup men's hockey tournament.

Glenn Turner led the way with four goals while Trent Mitton and Blake Govers both bagged three and 20-year-old debutant Joshua Beltz scored his first international goal in the lopsided clash at Stratford in New Zealand.

Coach Paul Gaudoin still wasn't entirely happy.

"It was great to start off with a strong win, however, we didn't play as well as we would have liked," said Gaudoin.

Also putting their names on the scoresheet were veteran superstar Jamie Dwyer (2), Chris Ciriello (2), Matthew Dawson and Flynn Ogilvie.

The Australians face a much more substantial challenge against hosts New Zealand on Thursday.
