Kookaburras, Hockeyroos get new series

A trans-Tasman men's and women's hockey Test series is carved into the international program for the next four years, starting in November.

Aiming to rebound from Rio Olympics disappointment, the Kookaburras and Hockeyroos are to play an annual international hockey series against New Zealand starting in November.

The inaugural series will be played in Auckland, with three men's and women's double-headers on November 17, 19 and 20. Results across all six Tests will determine the overall winner.

The series will rotate between the two countries, with Canberra to host in 2016 and 2018.

Both nations finished without medals at the Rio Olympics.

The top-ranked Australian men and the women's team both exited the Rio Games in the quarter-finals. The Kiwi men suffered the same fate while the women's team finished fourth.

Hockey NZ high performance director Terry Evans says the series marks a significant milestone for both countries in what he believes will be a long-term partnership.

"Having the opportunity to play an annual event gives our Black Sticks men and women amazing experience against two of the world's best teams," he said.

"As our closest neighbours, we are excited about the prospect of building on a much closer relationship with Hockey Australia at all levels of the sport. It's a rivalry which will help our teams get stronger and more confident the more we play them."
