Kookaburras shot at Champions Trophy glory

The Kookaburras will play India in the final of the last-ever men's hockey Champions Trophy tournament.

The Kookaburras will be out to cap off their historic men's hockey Champions Trophy dominance fittingly with one last title when they meet India in the final.

The Australians can claim a record-extending 15th Champions Trophy crown when the last match in the history of the 40-year-old, biennial six-team event is played in the Dutch city of Breda early on Monday (AEST).

The Champions Trophy makes way for the Pro League international tournament next year.

India qualified for the decider when they played out a tense 1-1 draw with hosts Netherlands on Saturday.

The Kookaburras qualified fore the decider on Thursday with a 3-1 win over the Dutch, which was preceded by a 3-3 draw with Belgium in their tournament opener and then wins over Pakistan (4-0) and India (3-2).

The Australians received a wake-up call on Saturday when beaten by Argentina for the first time in a decade, losing 3-2 as they were unable to stop the brilliant drag flicking of Gonzalo Peillat, who scored a hat-trick of goals off penalty corners.

"They've got a world-class flicker there and he found the back of the net three times," Kookaburras coach Colin Batch said.

"That's a big part of their game, we know that, but we weren't able to defend one of their key threats today."

Young forward Tim Brand scored both of Australia's goals.

"He's a young player, he's learning a lot and he's doing well at this tournament so we're pleased with his progress," Batch said.
