Kooyong to host Aussie Davis Cup opener

Australia have chosen to host their first-round Davis Cup tie against the Czech Republic on hardcourt at Kooyong in Melbourne.

Australia will launch their 2017 Davis Cup campaign with a first-round tie against the Czech Republic on a hardcourt at Melbourne's historic Kooyong club.

Australia suffered a first-round defeat to the USA at the same venue on grass in March, but secured a world-group berth with a comprehensive win over Slovakia in September in Sydney.

"To be back at Kooyong for Davis Cup is a bonus for us ... we feel this venue gives us the best possible chance against what will likely be a strong Czech team," Australian Davis Cup captain Lleyton Hewitt said.

"Kooyong holds so much history and provides a handy option for both teams straight after the Aussie Open.

"We were pumped to secure our spot in the world group in September and the boys are more eager than ever to get off to a good start in 2017."

The Czech Republic's 2016 Davis Cup campaign ended with a home quarter-final loss to France.

Australia have met the Czechs in Davis Cup eight times and hold an imposing 7-1 win-loss record against the three-time winners.

Next year's tie, which runs from February 3-5, will be just the second time the teams have met on hardcourt, with four on grass and three on clay.

The winner of this tie will play the victor of the Switzerland-United States first-round match-up.
