The 19-year-old wildcard shocked the tennis world overnight, defeating world number one Rafael Nadal in a match that featured the “shot of the year”.
News of his four set win was trending on social media this morning and Kyrgios’ brother Christos believes there is more success to come.
“When he’s on his game, there’s not really too much anyone can do to break him,” he said.
He said he had spoken to his brother online after the match, which he watched with his family in their “mad house” in Canberra.
He dismissed comments that Kyrgios was overconfident in the wake of the win, saying that a positive attitude was a necessary part of his success.
“If you don’t believe in yourself…. you’re going to get rolled over,” he said.
“It obviously works for him. Whether he’s cocky or confident, I don’t think it really matters. All it is is that he believes in himself.”
It’s an opinion that his former tennis coach Andrew Bulley shares, saying that Kyrgios’ success has a lot to do with his attitude.
“His mind is amazing, to be able to perform at that level,” he said.
“… That’s very mature for a young man. That’s really what sets him apart, that belief that he has in his game.”
Kyrgios will now face Canadian eighth seed Milos Raonic in the quarter-finals at Wimbledon, where Mr Buller believes the rising star will see more success.
“If he keeps his routine and keeps composure and keeps that belief he has in himself, the world’s his oyster,” he said.
