Prime Minister Julia Gillard and her government are enjoying their highest level of voter support in six months, according to the latest Newspoll.

Voter satisfaction with the prime minister has risen from 34 per cent to 36 per cent, with dissatisfaction going from 55 per cent to 56 per cent, according to the Newspoll, published in The Australian on Monday.

Opposition Leader Tony Abbott meanwhile has seen his satisfaction rating dip from 34 to 33 per cent, with voter dissatisfaction increasing from 55 to 57 per cent.

Ms Gillard extended her lead as preferred leader with a rise from 40 to 43 per cent, while Mr Abbott went from 35 to 36 per cent.

This is the second consecutive Newspoll survey that saw Ms Gillard extend her lead on Mr Abbott, recording the best figure she has had since May, the newspaper reported.

The Labor Party has also recorded an improvement, with its primary vote up one percentage point to 31 per cent, with the coalition slumping four points to 44 per cent.

On a two-party preferred vote, the coalition still holds a lead of 54 per cent to 46 per cent, but this is Labor's best Newspoll result since October.

The poll was conducted between Friday night and Sunday night, during the ALP national conference in Sydney, where delegates voted in favour of same-sex marriage, offshore processing of asylum seekers and the lifting of the ban of selling uranium to India.
