Bill Shorten has raised questions about whether the government's US refugee resettlement deal will be affected by a Donald Trump presidency but says Labor gives the arrangement in-principle support.
Opposition leader Bill Shorten says it would be hypocritical to reject the regional resettlement deal for asylum seekers on Manus Island and Nauru when it was "the very thing we wanted with the Malaysia solution some years ago."
"Labor and Liberal are on a unity ticket to defeat the people smugglers," Mr Shorten told reporters in Melbourne on Sunday.
"We will work with the government as they talk to us and subsequently brief us on the detail."
He said he hoped the election of Donald Trump would not affect the future of the deal and it would have been preferable for the agreement to have been finalised before Americans voted.
"But that is what it is, we in principal will work the the government subject to detail," Mr Shorten said.
Mr Shorten was in Melbourne to address the ALP's Victorian State Conference.
