Labor funds gap costs of defence families

Labor will fund gap of GP costs of defence families and dependants starting next year.

The federal government will soon pay all gap expenses for defence family visits to their GP.

Veterans Affairs Minister Warren Snowdon said from January 1, 2014, all families of Australian Defence Force personnel will be able to receive reimbursement for these costs.

Defence ran a four-year trial to improve access of defence dependants to healthcare in eight regional and remote locations under the National ADF Family Health Program.

Mr Snowden said this trial had shown overwhelming support for the national rollout of the program.

Navy Health Ltd has been contracted to provide claims processing and administration services under a deal worth up to $103.6 million over 42 months.

Some 71,000 defence dependents would now be eligible for assistance.

Funding for this project is already provided for in the budget.
