Labor gives notice of gay marriage bill

Labor leader Bill Shorten and his deputy Tanya Plibersek will bring on a bill to allow same-sex marriage.

Labor has given notice it will introduce a private member's bill to allow same-sex marriage.

The motion will go on the parliamentary notice paper on Wednesday.

But there is no guarantee the bill - to be moved by Labor leader Bill Shorten and seconded by deputy leader Tanya Plibersek - will come on quickly for a debate, as the opposition will need an absolute majority to suspend parliamentary rules to do so.
