Labor has strong case for re-election: Rudd

House sale doesn't mean I'm going: Rudd

Former PM Kevin Rudd says the sale of his Canberra house doesn't mean he intends to quit politics.

Kevin Rudd says federal Labor has a strong case for re-election and should not be "hauling up the white flag".

The former prime minister says Labor has a "phenomenally strong record" on the economy, pointing to Australia's low interest rates, unemployment and debt levels.

"We, on the basis of our economic record, deserve re-election," he told ABC television's 7.30 Report on Thursday.

"My job, through until voting day, is to argue that case for the Labor Party."

Mr Rudd maintained his position on leadership had not changed since he was defeated by Prime Minister Julia Gillard in last year's caucus vote.

"My job is to go and argue the case for Labor and that's what I'll be doing around the country between now and voting day.

"We should not be hauling up the white flag."

Asked why the public didn't seem to be listening to Ms Gillard's message, Mr Rudd said: "You know the great saying in politics that a week is a very long time.

"Well let me tell you, 100 days is an eternity," he added, referring to the time left until the September election.

Mr Rudd also committed to serving another full term in parliament should he be re-elected.

"I don't believe in bringing on unnecessary by-elections," he said.

He was also asked whether he would share responsibility if the government was defeated in the election, as some Labor MPs are anticipating.

"It is completely wrong for people in our national political life to be on about constructing alibis for defeat," he said, adding that MPs had the responsibility to devise and implement a strategy for victory.
