Labor holds first shadow ministry meeting

Opposition Leader Bill Shorten wants his shadow ministry team to work on a range of new policies, starting with science, small business and regions.

Federal Labor's initial policy work will focus on regional Australia, small business, science and innovation.

Opposition Leader Bill Shorten chaired the first meeting of his shadow executive in Canberra on Monday, urging colleagues to come up with "big ideas for the nation's future".

Mr Shorten told his senior MPs all of Labor's previous policies in government would be reviewed over time, but his initial policy priorities were the regions, small business, science and innovation.

However, he said Labor would stand by its previous policies on schools and disability care.

The opposition leader also urged colleagues to draw a line under the divisions of the past and treat both former prime ministers Julia Gillard and Kevin Rudd with respect.
