The Labor Party is pushing ahead in the Victorian seat of McEwen, but with nearly 5000 votes still to count the outcome remains far from certain.
The incumbent Rob Mitchell is ahead of his Liberal rival Donna Petrovich by 312 votes, his largest lead since vote counting began.
However on Thursday morning there were 4791 still to be counted.
Mr Mitchell's lead comes despite a 9.03 per cent swing away from Labor in the central Victorian electorate.
On Wednesday, independent Cathy McGowan wrested the northeast Victorian seat of Indi from Liberal incumbent Sophie Mirabella, with a lead of almost 400 votes and only about 500 votes to be counted.
