Labor keep Fremantle in easy contest

Labor MP Josh Wilson has held onto his WA electorate of Fremantle in a by-election that saw no competition from the Liberal Party.

A by-election win for Labor, returning Josh Wilson to his Fremantle electorate, was all but a guarantee.

But the former dual citizen is none-the-less grateful to be back.

British-born Mr Wilson represented the West Australian electorate for just two years before he was forced to resign for being in breach of the Constitution earlier this year.

"I am ... grateful and I am humbled to again be entrusted with the responsibility of representing this incredible community," he told supporters after winning back the seat in his Super Saturday by-election.

Mr Wilson retained the seat with 52.6 per cent of the primary vote, and took 66.8 per cent of two-party preferred vote to defeat Greens candidate Dorinda Cox.

But the electorate experienced low turnout - just 59.7 per cent with 38 out of 40 booths counted.

Mr Wilson says he would have liked to see a greater turnout, but took bigger issue with the delay getting to the by-election.

He resigned over his dual citizenship on May 8.

"For Barnaby Joyce they couldn't get it done quick enough, in this case they put communities in Queensland, Tasmania, South Australia and Western Australia without representatives for three months and spent the whole time saying that it would be a test of (Labor leader) Bill Shorten, that it would show they were back in the hunt," he said.

"Well, the result last night showed a very different picture and the PM today looked like someone who is going to be having a tense and unpleasant fortnight."

Mr Wilson also criticised the Liberals for their decision not to run a candidate in his seat.

Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull has vowed they will field a candidate at the next general election.

"I mean, the reality is we have limited financial resources," Mr Turnbull told reporters on Sunday.

"There will be a general election in the first half of next year so the people in Fremantle and Perth and in every electorate will have the opportunity to vote for a Liberal or a National or an LNP candidate then."
