A Labor win in the Victorian seat of McEwen is looking more likely.

Labor MP Rob Mitchell on Friday afternoon had extended his lead to 345 votes with 1600 votes still to count.

The Labor incumbent had trailed Liberal rival Donna Petrovich until Sunday, when he nosed ahead by 25 votes around 2pm.

No counting will be held over the weekend, but the count will resume on Monday.

Australian Electoral Commission (AEC) spokesman Dan Doherty said he could not speculate on who would win, but that people would make their own assumptions on the outcome.

"People might find it obvious based on the margin," he said.

Mr Doherty said some of the votes left to come in will be "partial admits" and would not have House of Representatives ballot papers.

Mr Mitchell is gaining very narrowly in pre-poll votes and now has his largest lead since vote counting began.

There has been a swing of more than nine per cent against Labor in the seat.

The last of the postal votes were accepted at 5pm on Friday with counting anticipated to finish on Monday or Tuesday.
