Labor pledges $3.5b to ease Vic traffic

A Shorten Labor government would spend $3.5 billion to ease congestion in Melbourne.

Melbourne's blocked motorways are being promised a decongestant in the form of a $3.5 billion federal Labor election promise.

In its bid to win government, the opposition is promising $1.75 billion towards the state government's North East Link toll road.

There is also $250 million promised for a high-speed busway along a widened Eastern Freeway.

Buses will be able to drive 100km/h in the fully-separated lanes into the city from the Doncaster park and ride which will also be upgraded along with a new park and ride at Bulleen, including multi-level car parks and cycling storage.

"(It) will make an enormous difference in terms of travel times, potentially cutting them down by a third, making a big difference to commuters," Shadow infrastructure minister Anthony Albanese said.

Another $1.5 billion is promised for various road upgrades across Melbourne's northern and southeastern suburbs.

The northern roads and southeastern roads projects are already underway by the state Labor government and are a combination of duplication and upgrade works to 12 arterial roads.

The promise comes on the heels of Labor promising $2 billion towards the $11 billion Metro Tunnel rail project already under construction.

Mr Albanese says the pledges lift Victoria's share of federal infrastructure funding to more than 25 per cent.

"I think very clearly that Victoria hasn't had its fair share," he said.

"Victoria has had to go it alone. Well they won't go it alone if a Labor government is elected on May 18."
