The Labor Party is promising $6 million over four years to community language schools nationally, if it's re-elected.
Minister for Education Bill Shorten says the funding would assist about 90,000 students at 500 language schools.
Mr Shorten says out-of-school community language classes enrich Australian society through a better understanding of tradition and culture, as well as language.
He says the Coalition has not committed to community language education.
"Money talks. We're putting in extra money," Mr Shorten says.
"I hope the Coalition chooses to match commitment to community language schools. But as we know the Coalition can't explain how they're costing most of their policies. So I remain pessimistic the Coalition is as committed as we are to all those hard working mums and dads, teachers and most importantly the kids who attend those Saturday morning classes all over Australia."
