Labor promises extra mental health support in WA

Labor has pledged to invest about $5.5 million in mental health services for young people in west WA if they win the election.

Labor is promising to boost mental health services for young people in west WA with a $5.5 million investment if they win the election.

The proposed integrated health hub would aim to bring a range of health and mental health services to the Peel region.

A three-tier program targeting secondary school students and aiming to spread awareness, prevention and intervention would also be rolled out.

David Templeman, Labor's member for Mandurah and the Peel Region, said suicide among young people is a major issue in the area.

"Within the last 12 months we have lost too many of our young people to suicide in this region," he added.

"We have huge issues in the Peel region and the construction of a one-stop-shop will help provide young people with the services they need."

WA Labor Leader Mark McGowan said: "Suicide is the leading cause of preventable death among Western Australian teenagers and more needs to be done to improve our young people's mental health and resilience.

"This program has been evaluated, it is effective and it is ready to roll out. Under a McGowan Labor government, it will be funded as a matter of priority."
