Labor promises to remove SA level crossing

Federal Labor has committed to removing a key Adelaide level crossing if it takes government at the upcoming election.

Federal Labor has committed $105 million to eliminate a "frustrating" level crossing in Adelaide.

If elected at the May 18 poll, a Labor government would fund half of the $210 million cost of removing the Cross Road crossing at Westbourne Park, south of the CBD.

Senator Penny Wong says the crossing is a source of frustration to the more than 35,000 drivers that travel the stretch of road daily.

"It's about reducing congestion, it's about making sure South Australians are safe and it demonstrates, yet again, federal Labor's commitment to infrastructure in South Australia," she said.

She called on the SA Liberal government to commit to funding the other half of the project.

Senator Wong was joined by Labor's Boothby candidate Nadia Clancy, Adelaide candidate Steve Georganas and state Opposition Leader Peter Malinauskas for the announcement on Tuesday.

Mr Malinauskas welcomed the commitment and said the crossing removal would alleviate congestion, particularly in peak hour

"Removing level crossings dramatically improves road safety, removes traffic bottlenecks and improves productivity," he said.

"It is time for [Premier] Steven Marshall to tell the people of South Australia whether the state government will join with the federal government to fund these important projects."
