Labor queries Turnbull energy policy

The federal opposition says any government energy policy not based on expert advice will put investment in jeopardy and lift power prices.

Labor says any energy policy presented to the coalition party room next week won't be based on industry or expert advice.

The Turnbull government is putting the finishing touches to its energy policy, which the prime minister says will address energy affordability, reliability and meet Australia's emissions target.

It's understood the policy could be discussed at Tuesday's coalition party room meeting in Canberra.

Labor spokesman Pat Conroy said the government had ditched Chief Scientist Alan Finkel's key recommendation of a clean energy target, which had the backing of industry and experts and bipartisan support.

"Whatever the prime minister presents to the party room, it has had no industry or expert consultation and will be the result of a shambolic process dictated by people who agree with former prime minister Abbott that policy to address climate change is akin to pagan goat sacrifice," Mr Conroy told AAP.

He said Australia needs a policy that delivers on the Paris commitments and provides certainty for the industry to invest in new generation.

"Until that certainty is provided, no well-informed investment decisions can be made, whether they're about new storage technology or maintenance or extension of existing coal generation."
