Federal Labor is questioning the Turnbull government's handling of women's discrimination, with the position of Sex Discrimination Commissioner left vacant for four months.

No replacement has yet been announced for Elizabeth Broderick, who left the post in early September, with Human Rights Commission president Gillian Triggs acting in the role.

"I'm floored that the government doesn't seem to care that Australia has no Sex Discrimination Commissioner," shadow attorney-general Mark Dreyfus told ABC radio on Wednesday.

Labor quizzed Attorney-General George Brandis about the delay in parliament last November.

"I am delighted to be able to tell you that an announcement will be made very soon," he told the Senate on November 12.
