Labor reintroduces lapsed gay marriage bill

Federal Labor is having another crack at legalising gay marriage, reintroducing a private member's bill which lapsed at the prorogation of parliament.

Deputy Labor leader Tanya Plibersek says she waited more than a year for someone from the coalition to back her same-sex marriage bill.

It was only when she introduced, with Labor leader Bill Shorten, the legislation last year that some government MPs started to come out in support of same-sex marriage.

On Monday she reintroduced her lapsed private member's bill, acknowledging that it may not even get a look in, given an election is expected to be called for July 2.
