Labor says it will help WA subbies

WA Labor will announce a policy it says will protect subbies who have lost hundreds of thousands of dollars due to non-payment from head contractors.

WA Labor will announce a policy to deal with the state's soaring number of payment disputes on government projects that it says will better ensure subcontractors will be paid.

The Opposition will on Tuesday call for the use of project bank accounts and consider a scheme that would block head contractors from government projects and possibly remove licences.

"The Liberal government has failed to protect WA subbies who have suffered heavy financial losses due to non-payment for work completed on government projects," Opposition Leader Mark McGowan said.

The competition watchdog, the ACCC, stepped in last month and warned large contractors in WA that it would take them to court if they refused to pay subcontractors.

Multibillion-dollar major public and private projects such as the new children's hospital, Perth airport extension and Elizabeth Quay riverside development have been notable for subcontractor complaints over massive amounts of unpaid work.
