The Australian Labor Party is seeking the advice of British and American political experts as it gears up for the next federal election.

Neera Tanden, a former adviser to Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton, will be on the guest list for a special conference of international progressive leaders in Sydney on February 24.

Ms Tanden is now president and chief executive of the Centre for American Progress, the largest progressive think tank in the United States.

Also speaking will be former chief executive of the Democratic National Committee, Tom McMahon, and Britain's longest-serving woman MP, Harriet Harman.

New Zealand Labour election campaign chairman and Ardern government minister Phil Twyford will also share his thoughts on his party's recent election win.

Former treasurer Wayne Swan, who is involved in the conference, says it will canvass new policy ideas and campaign methods.

"We want to focus on the global challenge of overcoming economic and social inequality," Mr Swan said.
