Labor seeks PM action on meningococcal

The federal opposition has asked the prime minister to consider a rollout of the meningococcal B vaccine.

Labor has asked the federal government to consider improving access to the meningococcal B vaccine.

A 16-year-old Hobart girl died last Thursday from the infection.

Opposition Leader Bill Shorten first wrote to the prime minister in November 2016 asking that children be better protected from the debilitating disease.

Mr Shorten has again this week asked Malcolm Turnbull what consideration is being given for the meningococcal B vaccine through the National Immunisation Program and what action is being taken to assist state and territory governments in providing access to the vaccine.

"Almost two years after first raising this with you, we again say to you that ensuring vaccination rates are as high as possible is one of the most important public health priorities for any government and call for you to help Australian parents and families to protect their children from meningococcal B disease," he wrote in the letter, co-signed by health spokeswoman Catherine King.
