Labor to boost Westmead Hospital

The Rudd government pledged to inject $122m into the redevelopment of Westmead Hospital.

A re-elected Rudd government would inject $122 million into the redevelopment of Westmead Hospital and boosted research facilities in western Sydney.

The funding would include $100 million to redevelop the hospital at Parramatta, the first upgrade since it was built in 1978, the government said in a statement on Sunday.

Westmead is the major hospital looking after Sydney's west - an area with a population of around 1.5 million people.

The federal government has called on the NSW government to match its funding for the redevelopment.

Westmead has indicated the boosted funding would allow it to consider projects such as a new building to bring complex and critical patient care services into one location, and expand and improve outpatient care and community health facilities.

The federal government also said it would make a $12 million capital investment to the Westmead Millennium Institute (WMI) for the next stage in construction of a new medical research and education facility.

Another $10 million will be provided to the Children's Medical Research Institute (CMRI) to complete Stage 1 of its redevelopment and allow it to boost its workforce from 120 to 200 medical researchers.
