Labor to ditch fibre to the node

The federal opposition says it will return to using fibre to the premises, instead of the node, if it wins the next election.

Labor will ditch delivering the national broadband network via fibre to the node if it wins the next election.

In a speech in Melbourne, the opposition's communications spokesman Jason Clare said Labor would return to a fibre network instead of Malcolm Turnbull's policy of adopting the use of copper.

"If you vote for the Labor Party at the next election you will be voting for more fibre," he said on Wednesday.

Communications Minister Mitch Fifield says Labor needs to explain how it will pay for its approach and how long it will mean for some households to get fast broadband.

"Typical of the modern-day Labor party, Jason Clare has refused to release any detail," he said in a statement.

Senator Fifield described rollout of the network under Labor as a "slow-moving train wreck" that would be completed by 2020 under the coalition.
