Labor stands ready to "weigh up" options should a by-election be triggered for former treasurer Joe Hockey's seat in North Sydney.

Mr Hockey hasn't yet resigned from parliament, despite indicating that he would quit after he was dumped as treasurer by incoming prime minister Malcolm Turnbull.

It's understood Mr Hockey will be offered the role of Australian ambassador to the US when Kim Beazley's term expires at the end of the year, however the government is yet to announce a move.

Opposition Leader Bill Shorten told reporters in Casino on Saturday that Labor would weigh up what was in the best interests of the voters in the strongly-held Liberal seat if a by-election was called.
