Labor tries to smoke out crossbench on tax

Labor's Senate leader Penny Wong has urged the crossbench to put up or shut up on company tax cuts by debating legislation in parliament.

Labor has failed to immediately force debate on legislation slashing the corporate tax rate in the Senate as they try to expose a potential One Nation backflip.

The government wants the upper house to approve its 10-year plan to reduce the corporate tax rate to 25 per cent, but One Nation's crucial two senators remain opposed.

Labor's Senate leader Penny Wong called on One Nation leader Pauline Hanson to prove her opposition to the cuts and rule out a backroom deal if the bill returns to parliament after the July 28 by-elections.

"It's time for senators here to put up or shut up. Are you being straight with the Australian people?" Senator Wong told parliament.

Senator Hanson refused to support debate being brought forward, although she insists her opposition to company tax cuts is unchanged.

"You are nothing but bullies in here. I think you need to wake up to yourselves and have a good look in the mirror," Senator Hanson said.

The other minor party also holding two key votes, Centre Alliance, voted against Labor's move, citing the convention of government controlling the upper house's agenda.

The coalition's Senate leader Mathias Cormann said the government was in favour of orderly management of the parliament.

"This is just another example of the Labor Party playing games," Senator Cormann said.

Last week, the government gagged debate on personal tax cuts to ram the bill through the Senate and back to the House to restore it to its original form.

The seven-year income tax reduction plan passed the Senate with the support of One Nation and Centre Alliance.
