The federal opposition would keep the coalition government's Australian Border Force, but add transparency.

Bill Shorten says Labor would retain Australian Border Force, but make it more accountable.

The force, which merged the frontline functions of customs and immigration, has been controversial since it was first started by the Abbott government on July 1, 2015.

Asked a double-barrelled question on 6PR radio whether Labor would retain it and make its operations more transparent, Mr Shorten said: "Yes and yes."
