Pop star Lady Gaga is the first person to hit the milestone of one billion total YouTube views, beating teen heart-throb Justin Bieber to the crown.

The 24-year old native New Yorker, whose real name is Stefani Germanotta, announced the milestone via her Twitter account, thanking her "little monsters" for the honour.

Justin Bieber is nipping at Gaga's heels, with more than 962 million total views on the video sharing site.

Bieber still holds the record for the most watched single clip of all-time, with his song "Baby" rating over 365 million views.
