Land Rover is unveiling the world's first "transparent bonnet concept," allowing drivers to view terrain just ahead of the wheels as if they could see straight through the front hood and engine.
Cameras located in the vehicle's front grille capture the close-up view and use it to give an augmented reality view.
This is fed into a head-up display inside the vehicle.
Land Rover says the virtually transparent bonnet is especially useful for SUV models, which are often taken off-road and need to negotiate around large rocks and down narrow tracks.
At the same time it helps drivers park a big car in crowded cities.
It will "help them tackle anything from the toughest off-road route to the tight confines of an urban car park," said Wolfgang Epple, director of research at Jaguar Land Rover.
The technology will be shown for the first time in a concept vehicle to showcase the next-generation Land Rover Discovery at the New York International Auto Show beginning Friday and running to April 27.
