Western Australia coach Justin Langer has delivered a parting shot the way of Marcus Harris after the young opener announced he was leaving for Victoria.

Harris, who played 42 Sheffield Shield matches for the Warriors, will head east to play for both the Bushrangers and Melbourne Rebels this summer.

Langer suggested the 23-year-old had failed to make good on his potential in six seasons with WA.

"His performances have been mediocre with flashes of brilliance," Langer told The West Australian newspaper.

"Marcus played more than 40 matches for WA and scored just four centuries.

"That must be frustrating for him, as it is for the coaches and fans.

"I respect the fact that our program is not for everyone and he leaves with our best wishes and the hope that he can one day play for Australia."

Harris became the youngest Australian to hit a first-class 150, the then 18-year-old scoring 157 against Queensland in 2010-11.

He also scored 81 and 158 not out in last year's Sheffield Shield final, however his 2138 first-class runs have come at an average of just 28.89.

He has also played 14 Big Bash matches for Perth, hitting 192 runs at an average of 19.41.
