Sean Langman has the oldest and smallest yacht in this year's Sydney to Hobart, but his other boat already has the supermaxis licked when it comes to a record time .
Langman holds the record for the fastest sailing passage between Sydney and Hobart of 29 hours 52 minutes and 23 seconds.and wants to crack the 24-hour mark.
But on Boxing Day he is preparing for a far slower trip on the 94-year nine-metre Maluka of Kermandie, which has finished all five of her Hobart races.
That includes last year, when more than a quarter of the fleet had to retire including supermaxis Wild Oats XI and Perpetual LOYAL.
"The big boats can break people's spirits," Langman told AAP.
There's talk that the 2012 line honours race record of one day 18 hours 23 minutes 12 seconds set by supermaxi Wild Oats Xi could be beaten this year..
In February 2013 he set the passage record from Sydney to Hobart in his 60-foot ORMA trimaran Team Australia
"We're now working at trying to get that record down to 24 hours." Langman said.
Langman knows all about the the big end of the Sydney Hobart fleet having done the race in supermaxi Investec LOYAL in 2009 and 2010.
"It's difficult for me to get excited about a 100 foot displacement boat when you've got a 60-foot trimaran that sails twice the speed," Langman said
"When it's all out boat speed, I'm getting toward the multihull side of things.
"As far as the accomplishment, the camaraderie, achievement, the enjoyment of doing the distance side. I like Maluka."
Maluka of Kermandie was the last boat to complete the race on two of her five Hobart campaigns.
Each time it's taken her between four and five days to finish, but she has always made it back before the new year.
"We have this thing about finishing by New Years eve," Langman said
"If there's a chance of beating boats that are longer (than us) then that's always a very satisfying experience."
