Australian swimmer Mitch Larkin has broken his second Commonwealth record in as many weeks, this time cracking the 100-metre backstroke mark.
A week after breaking the 200-metre Commonwealth record in Tokyo, Larkin clocked a 52.26 in the 100-metre dash to take gold on the first night of finals in the Doha-leg of the FINA World Cup.
"I'm really happy about the race tonight," Larkin said of the swim that was the second quickest in the world this season behind American Ryan Murphy.
"I wanted to match or even better my Tokyo time here in Doha but I'm still happy with it. If I can match my 200 time tomorrow, I'll be stoked. I feel great and I hope to do well tomorrow."
Golden girl Emily Seebohm claimed the other two Australian gold medals for Australia, winning the 50-metre and 200-metre backstroke events.
Her win in the 200-metre race was a dominant one, touching the wall 1.54 seconds before second-placed Hungarian Katinka Hosszu.
Seebohm has now won 13 backstroke gold medals in this year's World Cup series, with the 100-metre backstroke still to race in Doha and the final leg kicking off in Dubai on Friday.
Gold Coast's Melanie Wright claimed Australia's only silver of the night in the 50-metre freestyle, while her husband Chris picked up a bronze in the 200-metre butterfly.
Queenslander Leiston Pickett claimed Australia's sixth and final medal of the night, finishing third in the women's 100-metre breastroke.
