A victim of the Las Vegas massacre has returned to the scene days after he watched 'one of the greatest concerts' turn to carnage.

The victim only known as Justin spoke live with SBS World News reporter Meggie Palmer just metres from the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino where gunman Stephen Paddock opened fire on Route 91 country music festival.

The mass shooting killed 58 people before Paddock took his own life.
Justin was brought to tears as he recounted the attack, something he mistook for fireworks at first.

"If you don't know what that kind of gunfire sounds like you wouldn't associate that with gunfire,” he said.

"Nobody knew what it was. It stopped and then it started again and everyone thought it was fireworks... it sounded electronic, it didn't sound like a gun."

Justin said he did not feel unsafe until he saw headline act Jason Aldean, who was on stage at the time of the attack, flee the stage.

"Then I saw Jason Aldean throw his guitar down and he ran off stage. I grabbed my girlfriend's hand and just started running from the stage trying to get away," Justin said.

He said he thought Paddock was firing shots at the front of the stage before moving to the rest of the crowd.

"We were just lucky we were at the back where we were so we could get out a little faster," Justin said.

He described people panicking as they tried to escape the packed crowd.

"You didn't know if you should hide or keep running," he said.

"We didn't know if there were maybe more shooters around or explosives so we just decided to keep running."

Speaking on the Las Vegas Strip, Justin said he returned to the scene of the massacre to pay his respects to those who were not as lucky to survive.

"People need to know what happened," he said.
