Latrell Mitchell plays down the hype

Roosters fullback Latrell Mitchell says living up to the hype as one of the NRL's hottest rising stars is by ignoring it.

Blocking out the buzz - that's the key to Latrell Mitchell's continued emergence as one of the NRL's hottest young stars.

Mitchell has been one of Sydney Roosters' few bright lights in their worst ever start to a season, in almost every way living up to the hype that has him billed as the next Greg Inglis.

And the success in doing that is ignoring it, Mitchell says.

"It is just noise in the background, I don't like to get a big head about it," he said.

"I just want to enjoy being a kid playing the game I love.

"On Facebook I just block it away or just turn my phone off and don't look at it."

So impressive was Mitchell at the Auckland Nines and in his first match against South Sydney, Roosters coach Trent Robinson moved him to his favoured position at fullback, pushing Blake Ferguson back to centre.

Mitchell, who debuted in round one, said Robinson's faith in him has made it easier to transition from under 20s to the NRL.

"Being a young fella coming through the grades it is a big step really but I am enjoying playing footy on the big stage and I'm up for the challenge," he said.

"Robbo wouldn't have given me the chance if he didn't think I was up to it.

"I just said 'you are the coach you know when I am ready, I am just to enjoying myself in the 20s' and he said 'I think you are ready' and I said 'alright let's go I am ready'".
