Laurie Daley will likely step down as NSW State of Origin coach.

Daley remained coy on his future on Thursday, but said he would make an announcement in "the next couple of weeks" following the Blues series loss to Queensland.

However he has given every indication the 2017 series will be his last.

Off contract at the end of the season, Daley spoke with the NSW players after the game and told them of his decision.

"They're a good group to work with and I'm sure they've all got long careers in Origin," he said.

Wednesday's 22-6 series-decider loss to Queensland made Daley the first NSW coach to lose four series.

He delivered a drought-breaking victory of 2014.

"I obviously would've liked to have won more games but it's difficult to win against a mighty side," Daley said when asked to reflect on his five years in charge.

Brad Fittler would likely be the front runner to replace Daley, given his experience as NSW City coach, junior age mentor and two previous seasons with the Sydney Roosters.

NSW great Andrew Johns also left the door open to consider the role when he was quizzed after the match on the Nine Network.

A halves coach at the Roosters, the immortal had previously shot down any prospect of assuming a role before he indicated that could change on Wednesday night.

"I can't answer at the moment," Johns said.

" I don't know ... I don't know if I need that pressure in my life, if I'm going to be honest."

Former NSW assistant and premiership-winning coach Shane Flanagan also confirmed he had no immediate interest.

"I've got a contract here at the Sharks for another few years and I've got a lot of work to do," the Cronulla coach said.

"In my view you can't do both."

Former NSW under-20s coach Dean Pay would also be an option, while the junior side's current mentor, Danny Buderus, ruled out any interest in the role on Thursday.

"I'm happy doing what I'm doing," Buderus told AAP.
