Lawyer confirms money for QNI workers

Sacked Queensland Nickel workers could get payouts within 10 days, after a $7 million deposit was confirmed by a commercial lawyer.

Businessman Clive Palmer's lawyer has confirmed $7 million has been paid into a trust account to cover the entitlements of sacked Queensland Nickel workers.

The principal of Alexander Law, Sam Iskander, told reporters in Townsville on Tuesday the money had been received and the legal firm would be processing the claims.

Mr Iskander said 69 claims had already been made by former workers and the first payments were expected within 10 days.

Mr Palmer said he expected there could be 335 claims in total during the four-month window, after which the money would be returned to his company.

"Considering the floods and cyclones that have ravaged North Queensland, I have decided to pay any outstanding workers' entitlement amounts,'' Mr Palmer said.

"To assist them and their families in these difficult times."
