Organisers have called a lay day at the World Surf League event at Margaret River.

Conditions were deemed unsuitable for competition early on Wednesday morning, with the next call to be made at 7am on Thursday (0900 AEST).

The women's event has reached the quarter-final stage with six-time world champion Stephanie Gilmore still in the hunt, while the men's competition is up to the round-four heats.
