Lay day for French men's, women's surfing

The women's semi-finals and men's quarter-finals of the World Surf League tour event in France are on hold, with organisers calling a lay day.

With only small and fading surf on offer, organisers called a lay day on Tuesday for the men's and women's surfing events in France.

"Incredible five days of surfing so far, but we're going to call competition off for the day," said World Surf League (WSL) championship tour men's deputy commissioner Renato Hickel.

"The forecast is for the new swell to start building tomorrow afternoon (Wednesday) and Thursday seems to have similar conditions than the best day we've had so far."

First to compete when competition resumes at stop No.9 on the WSL championship tour will be either Australian defending champion Tyler Wright and American Sage Erickson in the Roxy Pro France semi-finals or Julian Wilson of Australia and Brazil's Italo Ferreira in the Quiksilver Pro quarter-finals.

The 21-year-old Wright made it through to the last four when she claimed the winning ride with just 30 seconds left on the clock against local favourite Johanne Defay with a series of exciting turns to net a 9.50.

"I had a feeling at the start of the heat that it was going to come down to the last minute," said Wright, ranked No.7 in the world.

"A little wave came along and you can't say no to a wave in that situation.

"It shut down, so paddling back out Johanne looked at the second one and I sort of pushed her into it a little bit, and the third and fourth waves were just dreamy.

"I'm really stoked with how I handled the end of that heat and happy to make the semis."

Fellow Australians Nikki Van Dijk and Sally Fitzgibbons, however, didn't advance.

Van Dijk was beaten by No.2-raked Hawaiian Carissa Moore in their quarter-final, while Fitzgibbons - the world No.3 and a former event winner - was downed by Moore's compatriot rookie Tatiana Weston-Webb.

In the men's, Australia has four surfers in the quarter-finals - Wilson, Mick Fanning, Bede Durbidge and Owen Wright.

WOMEN'S SEMI-FINAL MATCH-UPS:

* Tyler Wright (AUS) v Sage Erickson (USA)

* Carissa Moore (HAW) v Tatiana Weston-Webb (HAW)

MEN'S QUARTER-FINAL MATCH-UPS:

* Julian Wilson (AUS) v Italo Ferreira (BRA)

* Mick Fanning (AUS) v Bede Durbidge (AUS)

* Adriano De Souza (BRA) v Owen Wright (AUS)
