Leaders find the Heat too much in Brisbane

Brisbane Heat have overcome a nasty injury to West Indian recruit Deandra Dottin to record a tense five-run win over WBBL leaders Melbourne Stars.

Brisbane Heat have secured a thrilling five-run victory over WBBL leaders Melbourne Stars although their win came at a cost with West Indian allrounder Deandra Dottin taken to hospital.

Beth Mooney led the charge for the Heat, top scoring with 55 as the home side reached a competitive 5-129 at Allan Border Field in Brisbane.

In reply, the Stars fell just short of the target with their 6-124 based around Meg Lanning's 50.

Australian captain Lanning made 97 not out in the Stars' 54-run win over the Heat on Boxing Day.

The Heat's win, however, was marred by a nasty head clash in the outfield between Deandra Dottin and Laura Harris.

West Indian allrounder Dottin was taken by ambulance to hospital with suspected concussion, while Harris remained at the ground although she took no further part in the game.

Heat's star fast bowler Holly Ferling had been ruled out of the contest due to a concussion sustained while hitting her head on the ground during the Boxing Day match.

The Stars had looked on track for victory until Lanning's dismissal.

"It was very tough to watch our teammates get hurt. You never want to see it," said Mooney.

"But we took the opportunity to have that small break and we turned the game around."

Despite the defeat, the Stars remain top of the standings after the match in Adelaide between their nearest competitors - Adelaide Strikers and Hobart Hurricanes - was washed out without a ball being bowled.

Melbourne Stars have eight points with four wins from six matches ahead of Adelaide Strikers on net run-rate, with Hobart Hurricanes and Sydney Thunder a point away.

Sydney Thunder made it two wins in as many days with a comfortable eight-wicket win over bottom side Melbourne Renegades at Blacktown.

The Renegades were limited to 6-93, with Australian off-spinner Erin Osborne starring with 3-23.

In reply, the Thunder eased past the victory target in style reaching 2-96 off just 11.4 overs with West Indian star Stafanie Taylor contributing 48 not out from 37 balls.
